ROSSMOOR TENNIS CLUB
Board Meeting Minutes
July 21, 2014

Meeting Minutes:

In the absence of President Mark Patterson, Vice President Dick Normington called the quarterly general meeting of the Rossmoor Tennis Club to order at 1:35 pm on Monday, July 21, 2014 in Rooms 1&2 at Creekside.

Present: Dick Normington, Barbara Schwartz, Bill Sederowitz, Dave Kern, Randy Kuhl, Barbara Phillips, Loc Barnes.   Absent: Mark Patterson, Suzanne Eldridge

President:
Opening remarks by Dick included a report from Mark indicating the final inspection of the Buckeye Tennis courts has yet to be completed.

Rules 106.1 and 106.2 of the GRF rules for Buckeye and Creekside courts were in need of updating. The Board has submitted their proposed changes to the GRF Policy Committee who will review the changes at their August 5th meeting.

One concern involving updating revolved around the propane BBQ at Buckeye. Only approved grill meisters will be allowed to operate the BBQ. At present only Mark Patterson, Dick Normington, Len Cook, Dave Sperry and Fred Barnes have been instructed on the use of the propane BBQ. Anyone else interested in becoming a grill meister should contact Mark Patterson.

Secretary:
In the absence of Suzanne Eldridge, Les Hoskyns reported that in May, Susanne emailed RTC calendars for June, July and September to the membership. Beginning in September, the RTC automated calendar will be online at www.rossmoortennis.com   This will allow members to see any changes made to the calendar as soon as Susanne posts them.   The online RTC calendar will carry scheduled events well into the foreseeable future.   For internet privacy reasons, members' phone numbers and email addresses will NOT be published online.   Instead, members will be referred to their yellow Membership Directory 2014 (and updates sent out periodically) for contact information.

Treasurer:
Barbara Schwartz reported that the club is financially strong with a checkbook balance of $13,698.45.   When asked why we maintain such a high balance, Barbara indicated we have some big expenses coming up after the final inspection of the Buckeye complex.

Vice President: No report. Comments made for President.

Tournaments:
Randy Kuhl announced there will be 3 tournaments in August: Women's Doubles, August 16; Trilogy, August 23 and the "Rossmoor Turns 50" tournament on August 30.   The "Rossmoor Turns 50" tournament is a special addition for this year and will be open to all Rossmoor residents.   Randy hopes to fill 8 courts with men's and women's doubles.   GRF will invite the top 3 winners in all categories to a special luncheon.   The sign-up sheet will be posted on August 16 at Buckeye.

Dave Kern brought up the idea of adding some new clubs for exchange matches.   He has already contacted Round Hill CC and is awaiting their reply as to their interest.   Several other clubs were mentioned and Dave asked for any ideas to be submitted to either himself or Randy Kuhl.

Wild Card:
Barbara Phillips reported the Wild Card has been going well. The next Wild Card is August 2, and Barbara requested more men sign up.   Wild Card sign up is always posted 2 weeks in advance.

Publicity:
Dave Kern asked that he be contacted whenever someone wanted publicity for an event to be posted in the Rossmoor News.

Facilities and Maintenance:
Jerry McConnell thanked the Club for the gift he and Nan had received in honor of the 15 years they've hosted the Summer BBQ.   He expressed their enjoyment of doing this over the years and although they will no longer be hosting this event, they will continue to be involved in the social events.

Sunshine:

  • Nancy McConnell also thanked the Club for their generosity and thanked all those who had helped with the BBQ.
  • Nancy reported that Hal Rutledge had surgery but was home and on the mend. She reminded everyone to please call her when they heard of someone who was ill or had surgery.
  • Nan also thanked everyone for the donation of tennis balls which she continues to deliver to Mannor Care and KinderCare.   If anyone has someplace they'd like to have tennis balls delivered, please contact her.

Social:
Loc Barnes thanked all those who helped her with the food and set-up for today's meeting.   She thanked Nan and Jerry for the successful BBQ and announced that the next social event will be the Golf Tournament on September 6.

Membership and Reservations:
Joyce Niebur announced that membership was now at 257 members. New members Irene Friedman and Judy Corliss were introduced.

Court Engineer / Supplies:
Bill Sederowitz reported that all the supply cabinets are full.   A Lost and Found has been established and lost items can be found in the unlocked cabinet below the counter along with the first aid kit.

Bill has been working on getting the score towers to be located at the same end of the net as the ball trays, new nets on some of the courts, new straps on a couple of nets, sprinklers redirected on court 3.   Some of these things will not be completed until after the project has been signed off by GRF.

Bill had a hand-out with new Court Rules to be posted at Buckeye and Creekside.   The current rules are outdated. Bill will submit the proposed new signage to the GRF for approval.

Old Business:
None

New Business:
Barbara Blum invited everyone to the Mechanics Bank Tennis Tournament at Moraga Country Club from August 5 thru August 10.   The tournament is free with lots of good tennis to watch.

Barbara Schwartz announced that the ladies BALL league will start again in September with two teams, one a B-3 team and one a B-2 team. All ladies are invited to join.

Many nice prizes were given out at the raffle after the business of the day was concluded.

Dick Normington adjourned the meeting at 2:35 pm.  The next general meeting will be held November 17, 2014.

Respectfully submitted by:
Joyce Niebur, Acting RTC Secretary
