The Calcutta Mixed Doubles Tournament format is quite unique. If done correctly, it provides all players with an equal opportunity to win, regardless of playing ability. The first 32 men and the first 32 women who register and pay the entry fee are then rated by gender from best (1) to least skilled (32.)

The 32 players for both genders will then be placed in a hat and drawn randomly. This will continue until all players have been given a partner, comprising 32 teams. These 32 teams will then be given a handicap based on their combined skill levels and how they compare to the other 32 teams.

The next order of business will be to complete a blind match draw using a software program known as TDM, which assigns matches for all teams randomly. The draw will be made public once the teams have been auctioned off.

The auctioning of the teams occurs on the Friday night before play begins at a party where wine, beer and other beverages are served, as well as finger foods. There will be a nominal fee charged to non-players for attending the party to help cover costs. Any person or persons may bid on a team, including their own. When all teams are sold, some by silent auction and some by live auction, the proceeds go into a large pot. This pot will be divided among the winning and finalist teams in the main draw, the winning and finalist teams in the consolation draw, and the owners (whoever "bought" the teams.) The owner's shares will be larger than the player's. The club will need to receive payment for purchase of a team at the party.

Every match will have a 5 minute warm-up and a court monitor to track the score for every point during the match. There will be no available warm-up at Buckeye. Coin toss or racquet spin will be done prior to warm-up. When play begins, each player will serve 2 points, and players will change sides every 8 points until one team reaches 30 points. 30-29 is a complete match.

The first team to reach 30 points will win that match. As an example, one team might have the 2nd best man and the 6th best woman. They might play a team with the 23rd best man and the 19th best woman. The more skilled team could have a handicap of minus 18 (-18) and the other team a handicap of plus 10 (+10.) The more skilled team would then have to win 48 points to get to 30, but the lesser skilled team would only have to win 20 points. As any player can tell, it is important that the committee assigning handicaps must have a good knowledge of all players' abilities.

With 8 courts and 32 teams, the first day of matches should be completed in approximately 6 hours. If play begins at 9:00 a.m., everyone should be finished around 3:00 p.m. (All teams will have played at least two matches.) All first round losers go into a consolation draw. At the completion of play on Saturday, both the main draw and the consolation draw will be down to the quarterfinals, with 8 teams left for Sunday , 4 teams in the winner's bracket, 4 teams in the consolation bracket. Once the semifinals in each bracket have been completed on Sunday, all teams remaining and their owners ultimately will win money. The finals will then be played to determine the winners of both the main and consolation draw.
